They set up a whole bunch of little liabilities and LLCs in the Bahamas and in Bermuda that would offload toxic assets for Bear Stearns. They'd be in the red only to sell them at a loss to a subsidiary and get the rating agency to look and buy it back.
Towers Financial ponzi scheme - Epstein worked at Towers Financial with Stephen Hoffenberg, who briefly owned the NY Post and saved it from bankruptcy. Together they raised almost $500M of investors money by selling them fake bonds. They'd then use the money to repay earlier investors while pocketing the difference.
