Mickey Cohen was a West Coast Jewish gangster who funded the terrorist cell Irgun in pre-state Israel. He also ran a sexual blackmail ring which targeted public officials and movie stars, one of which was Maralyn Monroe. In 1959, the LA District Attorney was keeping Cohen under surveillance when his agents saw Marilyn several times in the company of Cohen’s henchmen. One of those agents, Gary Wean, had listened to one blackmail-worthy tape of Marilyn. After she died, prosecutor, John Miner argued that the massive concentration of drugs in her system could not be explained by swallowing capsules alone, especially given the absence of undissolved pill residue or a corresponding high concentration in her stomach. This would be consistent with the drugs being administer through an enema, which would be impossible with her alone.
Cohen was a friend of John Stompanato, a gangster with ties to Cohen and an associate who had a relationship with Lana Turner. After Stompanato's death in Turner's home, Cohen disclosed intimate letters written by Turner to Stompanato to the press to refute claims of abuse Stompanato had allegedly inflicted on Turner, who had claimed Stompanato was violent.
