Yugoslavia

Germany got the EC, (European Community, later EU) and consequently America, to recognize Croatian independence if the succeeded from Yugoslavia. But the policy was that populations within Croatia couldn't succeed, which led to the Yugoslav war, which led to the Bosnian genocide.

Even so, the former Yugoslav states came up with the Lisbon Agreement, to try and prevent Bosnian War by dividing Bosnia and Herzegovina into ethnic cantons. This was sabotaged by US Ambassador, Warren Zimmermann who he met with Bosnian leader, Alija Izetbegović, questioning why he signed the ethnic-canton partition plan, and assuring him of American backing for an independent state.

NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999 resulted in between 489 and 528 civilian deaths, while official and varying institutional claims range from several hundred up to thousands.

Lieutenant General Michael C. Short, the Commander of Allied Air Forces at a press conference: "If you wake up in the morning and you have no electricity, no water, no gas, no bridges, no telephone, no TV stations, then you have to ask yourself: 'How long can we live like this?' ... We can take you back to 1389. If you want to go back to 1389, we can do that. Or we can take you to 1950, or we can take you to next week."

They also directed al-Qaeda, fresh from fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan, to aid the Bosnians.

Kosovo WarDuring the 1999 Kosovo War, US and NATO led a 78-day air campaign targeting Serbs, who were ethnically cleansing Albanians in Kosovo. The bombings killed around 528 civilians, 56-60% of whom were Albanians, while rest being Serbs.
