Murder of Journalists and Activists

More journalists killed in Gaza than in both world wars, Vietnam, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan combined.

🇺🇸Rachel Corrie - A 23yr American journalist who was purposefully crushed to death by a bulldozer while trying to prevent the demolition of Palestinian homes. Rachel was wearing a flashing jacket and using a megaphone. The bulldozer ran her over twice. Israel's supreme Court exonerated the army, claiming it was 'wartime activity'. The Israeli court closed the investigation file without charging the bulldozer driver after the acquittal of Rachel's killer was issued in 2013 on the pretext that there was no negligence on the part of the bulldozer driver. 

In 2000 Anthropologist Nancy Scheper-Hughes recorded the former head of Israel's forensic institute, Yehuda Hiss, on tape admitted that pathologists harvested organs from dead Palestinians without the consent of their families, a practice which Israel said ended in the 1990s. Dr. Hiss was also responsible for performing Rachel Corrie's autopsy. Her family requested that an American official be present at her autopsy, which they were told was the case. However on March 14, during the first round of hearings in the Corries' civil suit, Hiss admitted under oath that he had lied about the presence of an American official during the autopsy of Rachel Corrie. He also conceded to taking "samples" from Corrie's body for "histological testing" without informing her family. Just which parts of Corrie's body Hiss took remains unclear.

🇺🇸The Gaza flotilla raid - The Gaza Freedom Flotilla was carrying humanitarian aid and construction materials, with the intention of breaking the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip. The IDF attacked the Flotilla, killing nine activists, some shot in the back of the head and at close range, and wounding dozons, including one who later died of his wounds. Furken Doğan was a Turkish-American Journalist who was killed during the raid.

🇺🇸🇵🇸Alex Odeh - A Palestinian activist who was assassinated in a bombing in 1985. Odeh was The West Coast regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, who was assassinated by members of the Jewish Defense League in California, 1985.

Tom Hurndall - A British volunteer for the International Solidarity Movement who was shot in the head in the Gaza Strip by an IDF sniper, Taysir Haybw, while trying to shield Palestinians.

🇵🇸Shireen Abu Akleh - A Journalist for Al Jazeera who was shot dead by an Israeli sniper while covering the Israeli army’s raid on a refugee camp in Jenin in the occupied West Bank. One of her colleagues was also injured in the targeted killing.

According to the CPJ, Israeli defence forces have killed at least 20 journalists, since 2001, 18 of them Palestinians. The report also notes that at least 13 were killed when they could be clearly recognized as journalists. Despite occasional investigations, no one has ever been charged or held responsible for any of these killings.   

However, in many cases, and especially during the current attacks on Gaza, the Israeli army has carried out attacks that struck private residences even when there is no known or clear military target. For example, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, by Nov. 29, Israel had killed 50 Palestinian journalists in Gaza, some of them in their homes with their families.

Roshdi Sarraj, 31, a journalist from Gaza who was born in Britain, founded a media outlet in Gaza called “Ain Media.” On Oct. 22, an Israeli bomb struck his parents’ home where he was sleeping, killing him. The journalist Salam Mema similarly died under the ruins of her home after it was bombed; of her three young children, Hadi, 7, died, while Sham, 3, has not yet been found under the rubble. Two other journalists, Duaa Sharaf and Salma Makhaimer, were killed together with their children in their homes.

Amal Khalil - Journalist Amal Khalil said In a video: "I received direct threats targeting me on my phone from the Mossad, from the Israelis, and they threatened to kill me. They were literally saying they would sever my head from my shoulders if I didn’t leave south Lebanon." She was killed with a precise drone strike.
